| >>> DJ Dogg and La Mano Fria in Japan | ||
![]() The latest mix from DJ Dogg is out entitled, Rice and Beans Mixed & Served part 2.For those that don't know Dogg is the founder of Mic Jack Production, one of the illest crews in Japan hailing for the northern island of Hokkaido. Though it was in the southern island of Kyushu, that brought the Miami and Sapporo crew together for a show in 2004. Epstein and La Mano Fria after meeting in Fukuoka, later were invited to by Dogg and his crew to Sapporo and Tomakomai in 2005. Now in 2008, we are proud to show what happens when North Japan meets South Florida and South America. In particular, this mix, which is sponsored by Rice and Beans Clothing brand, is dedicated to the struggle for peace in Colombia. Where an over half century civil war has now escalated into a conflict that now has been taken outside Colombia's borders and into neighboring countries like Ecuador and Venezuela. Speaking of Colombians, don't forget to check out DJ Stravinsky's first mix in the series together with Salami Fingers, Rice and Beans Mixed & Served part 1, which dropped back in 2007. To celebrate the release DJ Dogg and La Mano Fria just ended a tour in Japan which included Niigata, Tokyo and Sapporo. Thanks to all the fans for the support and Toka Loca at RL66 for making it all come together. And stay tuned for an upcoming release from Dogg in 2008! Also, La Mano Fria's clothing brand Rice and Beans and Sapporo brand, Natural Bicycle introduce a collaboration of a limited design entitled "Radio Suckers Never Play Me". Inspired by La Mano Fria's work with pirate radio in Miami in the late 90's and by the lyrics of one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time, Public Enemy. One of their greatest songs, "Rebel without a Pause", dropped back in the late 80's gave way to show an entire generation the real power of music combined with a message. Another favorite verse by Chuck D - "No matter what the name - we're all the same... Pieces in one big chess game". Don't believe the hype! After the event, Meer Lounge, hosted an art exhibition by La Mano Fria. And ending La Mano Fria's tour was a solo performance in Tomakomai with the crew from Z.O.I.D. at Club Hidden. Amazing people and vibe, Tomakomai = Miami... One love! ![]() |

| >>> Deviant's further Social Commentary: Jena 6 | ||
It has taken 10 months and thousands of black faces to garner attention to yet another mark of racial injustice. If you don't yet know of the plight of the Jena 6, google it...NOW. The issue is not so much that the black teens involved should be let off with no punishment, rather why their punishment is so extreme when NO punishment was handed down to white students involved in the long brewing tension. A white student pulled a shotgun on a black student, and after the black student wrestled the gun away from him and escaped with it in tow, the black student was charged with theft of a firearm, second-degree robbery and disturbing the peace. The white student who pulled the weapon was not charged at all. That same black student, Robert Bailey, had been beaten up the night before at a majority white party...no charges have been filed. Later on, when 6 black students assaulted a white instigator, they were charged with aggravated assault and attempted 2nd degree murder. Only last week were the assault and attempted 2nd degree murder charges dropped in the majority of the cases, 10 months after the first convicted, Mychal Bell, has been in prison. I do not suggest these students be let off with no punishment. Give them their due battery charges. However, arrest the student who pulled a shotgun on someone and seek out those involved in the battery of the black student, and definitely seek charges of conspiracy towards a hate crime on whoever hung 3 nooses on the tree from which this particular case stems. Otherwise, justice and equality are failed yet again. Check out more message from Deviant. |

| >>> Deviant: Social Commentary | ||
Out now, debut album from AIO/BBC audio soldier, Deviant. Though many use the word "deviant" to deviate from the law, the Miami artist known as Deviant deviates from the musical norms and stereotypes. Born and raised here in Miami, makes one hard to define with influences ranging from Cuban, Brazilian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, Haitian, Nicaraguan, African American and many other cultures. With parents being from Bahamian and Jamaican roots, Devaint main influences came not from reggae or calypso, but from drum and bass, electronica, rock, jazz, funk, broken beat and hip hop. American DJ culture captured his soul though he plays an array of traditional musical instruments such as keyboard, flute, saxophone, bass, etc. Deviant's music is driven by digging in the crates and studying, while pondering social issues and exploring various cultures in his travels. Social Commentary is an audio scrapbook of Deviants last few years, bits and pieces of an artist who doesn't fear not being labeled. This debut will take you on a musical journey through inspirational spoken word from Deviant himself with the help of his father, uptempo-funk-soul-tinged tunes, downtempo, electro, freak work outs to beautiful melodic, jazz, electronica fusions. On a few of the tracks he also has the lyrical aid of Seven Star (Couterflow, Botanica del Jibaro), Serum (Botanica del Jibaro), Stres from Antennae (Botanica del Jibaro), Deviant himself and many more. Design by La Mano Fria from Beta Bodega Coalition. Check out a preview here! |

•USA• The pesticide was designed to kill worms infesting the roots of banana trees on Latin American plantations. But at least 5,000 agricultural workers from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama have filed five lawsuits in this country claiming they were left sterile after being exposed in the 1970s to the pesticide known as DBCP. Dow Chemical Co. and Amvac Chemical Corp., manufacturers of the pesticide, "actively suppressed information about DBCP's reproductive toxicity," according to the lawsuit. "Defendants, however, continued to market, sell and use pesticide products containing DBCP outside of the United States, including Nicaragua." |

| >>> Jahbitat: Harpy Lights the Canopy | ||
![]() Jahbitat is the audio project of Simon Williams, who moved around Latin America as a young child but eventually ended up growing up in the valley located on the Venezuelan coastal range. This massive urban jungle known as Caracas, is surrounded by every aspect of nature (sky, mountain, jungle, ocean, etc..) and creatures both big and small. This fusion of man-made technology meets complete wildlife is what can be found at the core of the Jahbitat electronic yet highly organic sounds. Guitar drones, syncopated drums and sometimes even vocals accompany an arrange of tones that get trapped in an electronic forest of knobs, effects and machines. Simon's has now transplanted his melodic sound and abstract beats into his surroundings of Barcelona. Jahbitat has been performing around Europe at festival circa for several years and linked up with Miami's Beta Bodega Coalition/Botanica del Jibaro for a series of shows in 2003, which finally resulted in a selection of songs which mesh the past, present and future for his debut release. Some may have heard the self released cd-r entitled "Tonadas" back in 2004, which made the rounds at the Sonar festival. An artist and friend of Arepaz and Project Mooncircle, we now proudly present Harpy Lights the Canopy. | >>> May 1 [May Day!] | ||
•USA• The small town of Florence, Arizona, sits at an epicenter of a new boom in private prisons for immigrants. Florence hosts Arizona’s state prison, two privately run prison complexes, and one Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration jail. The town “has a prison economy and a prison consciousness,” says Victoria López, an attorney who runs the town’s only pro bono legal center that helps immigrant detainees fight their cases. Contracts for these new jails flowed to the private prison industry despite the previous history of mismanagement and scandal. Yet the problems have not been solved – today detainee advocates still decry the treatment of immigrant inmates. They accuse prison companies of cutting corners in training guards and in providing basic services. The government has done little to regulate prison administration, but has sanctioned exploitive labor practices and rip-off telephone costs for inmates. |

•USA• More than 100 Haitian migrants reached South Florida on Wednesday after spending at least three weeks at sea in a dilapidated sailboat, officials said. One man died in the crossing, and three people were in critical condition from dehydration. Many of the 101 migrants looked gaunt and exhausted as they were taken into custody by local and state officials. Nearly a dozen minors, including a 10-year-old boy, were among the group. The body of one man washed ashore, and officials said they believed he drowned. The migrants reached land at Hallandale Beach, about 15 miles north of downtown Miami. Haiti is about 700 miles southeast of Miami. Unlike Cubans, who are generally allowed to stay once they reach U.S. soil, most Haitians who make it to the U.S. are sent back. |

•USA• Authorities have identified three people fatally shot in a February 8 attack on a pickup truck filled with immigrants as two Mexican nationals and a Guatemalan. The identities were made through partial identifications found on the bodies of the three and with assistance to verify their authenticity from the Mexican and Guatemalan consulates, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday. The victims were identified as Rudy Ottoniel Raxuleu Castro, 29, of Guatemala; Cesar Mora Lopez, 18, of Mexico, and Juana Juarez Gonzales, 40, of Mexico. The early-morning assault occurred in the Ironwood Forest National Monument, near the Silver Bell mine, northwest of Tucson. Three or four people fired on the pickup truck, and the vehicle sped off along the dirt road for several miles before veering out of control into the desert. Lopez and Gonzales died in the truck, while Raxuleu Castro, shot in the head, was dragged from the truck by three other survivors. A man later identified as a smuggling guide, Pedro Luis Beltran, 21, of Mexico, was shot in the hand and arrested. Lt. Mike O'Connor, head of the sheriff's violent crimes unit, said detectives had no leads on suspects. "We're dead in the water," he said. |

We have more coming for the end of Spring. And thanks to all the haters too, your energy is turned to positive and makes us work more. Rice and Beans is one of the various Beta Bodega Colaition projects we have to spread our message along with records, cds, books, exhibitions, etc. Unlike our label band shirts which are cheaper to make, Rice and Beans cost more because they are manufactured, altered, printed and packaged in Japan, which is our only option. Its our way of infiltrating and infecting certain fashionable groups or scenes of people with our message. Whether they "get it" or someone who sees them on the street wearing the shirt "gets it" thats not for us to know, what we do know is if we don't try then we will know the outcome which is no one will be exposed to the message. This is a group or scene you might not be down with and thats ok, because if we had our way, we'd transmit our message via everything from vitamins, alarm clocks or cooking pans for your kitchen and reach everyone eventually. But for now we'll stick to what we feel we know best. Also we make short runs of these garments which ofcourse makes the cost go up. Some people uninformed to the reality of running and maintaining an independent business assume because the shirts are expensive we must making tons of money. But its quite the opposite as in retail shops in Japan make most of the profit as they generally mark things up at 60% of the wholesale price for these limited items. And lastly, yes, we use photos of ourselves, family, crew and friends in real life situations because we have no money or interest in hiring models. And yes, all our websites promote the clothing brand since we have no money to promote anywhere else (fancy magazine ads and so forth). We'd invite you to put a banner of our products on your website to help us. And the day that we are making lots of money, you should be glad, because it means we can produce more forms of media to spread our messsage. Being part of the underground is not sitting around whining, assuming and gossiping about who's "not keeping it real". Underground is working and dedicating your life to preserving some movement, message, way of think thinking or expression that is not accepted by the masses because it contrary to what the system wants you to accept. This system ranges from music industry to to the military industrial complex, which we see today, overseas (army) and in your neighborhood (police). For over 10 years, this is what Beta Bodega Coalition & Rice and Beans (shirts) have attempted to stand for, the underground. So dear haters, in the future don't hide your frustration, deep, dark feelings inside and talk shit with your boys, we invite you to unleash and set free the bitch in you and drop us an email (just click the link at the bottom of this website) and we'll happily address your hate directly. Much love! |

•Australia• "Should limit Muslim immigration or a large Islamic population could pose a higher risk of violence", a visiting Jewish expert on Islam says. Professor Raphael Israeli is quoted in the Australian Jewish News as saying that without such a migration cap Australia risks being swamped by Indonesians. Prof Israeli, an expert on Islamic history at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, has been brought to Australia by the Shalom Institute of the University of NSW. He said Muslim immigrants had a reputation for manipulating the values of western countries, taking advantage of their hospitality and tolerance. “Greeks or Italians or Jews don't use violence,” he said.“When there are large Muslim populations who are prepared to use violence, you are in trouble.“ If there is only one or two per cent they don't dare to do it - they don't have the backing of big communities.“They know they are drowned in the environment of non-Muslims and are better behaved.” But Prof Israeli told Fairfax newspapers his comments had been misunderstood. Muslims account for about 1.5 per cent of the Australian population. |

![]() •Peru• Between 30,000 and 50,000 mercenaries are working in Iraq, making them the second largest military force there after the occupying United States. The case of Iraq's invasion "is a new manifestation of the use of mercenaries...", Spain's Jose Luis Gomez del Prado (a member of the UN working group on mercenaries) said Friday during a visit to Peru. The United States has 130,000 soldiers in Iraq, he noted. Britain has 10,000 troops. Gomez del Prado told a news conference thousands of Peruvians, Chileans, Colombians, Hondurans and Ecuadorans had been contracted to work as mercenaries in Iraq, thanks to an array of legal loopholes. Rights workers have voiced concern that people are being hired to work as low-paid security guards in Iraq but are then given military training and asked to perform "previously unforseen tasks" which draw them into full combat. Gomez del Prado's Colombian colleague, Amada Guevara, told the news conference that in some cases, workers were contracted by existing companies who exploited legal loopholes. But in other cases, they were taken on by ghost firms who arrived in a country, opened an office for a month, contracted workers and then disappeared without trace. "This amounts to privatisation of warfare," she said. |

| >>> Arepaz Immigrante Orchestra 2007 | ||
The Orchestra is a loose band of musicians that represent and capture the classic Arepaz sound. Immigrante, the spanish word for immigrant, because this is what Arepaz represents people Members include Roberto Lange also known as Epstein and his now disbanded project called Boom & Birds. Roberto is a second generation Ecuadorean with many of his family still living in Guayaquil. After living in Miami and Atlanta, he now resides in Crown Height, Brooklyn. His music combines his skill of a traditional producer which involves drum machine, computer and samplers to his skill with a guitar and keyboards. He's reformed at Sonar 2004 in Barcelona and toured throughout Europe and Japan since. Another member is Deviant. Deviant son of Bahamian and Jamaican parents was brought up in Miami. Deviant's musical taste ranges from broken beat and hip hop to funk and rock. His talent as a musician ranges from playing the rhodes, saxaphone and flute to programming beats on a computer. Devaint is currently traveling Latin America, where he will study language and music in Peru and Brazil. Last is Manuvers and Climber who are all of Chilean descent. These artists use more traditional methods of beat making, sampling from vinyl. Climber is a 2 man crew of producers with members whose travel has expanded from Tokyo to Buenos Aires and everywhere in between, which explains their extensive vinyl collection. Manuvers, who is also a DJ, has performed as well at Sonar 2004 as well as at many major music festivals in Santiago, the Chilean capitol. Manuvers is also known for his role as part of the Miami based label Counterflow. The entire collective is directed by the label owner and graphic designer, La Mano Fria who has worked for over 10 years to bring forth a message through art and music. The message of Arepaz Immigrante Orchestra is simple. Real roots music and immigrant pride because the world has no real borders, only those created by those who control the masses. Arepaz Immigrante Orchestra reminds you, the world is yours! ![]() February 9 at Unit in Tokyo, members of Arepaz Immigrante Orchestra were on hand to rock the crowd. Climber members Shift and DJ Tosh along with Epstein flipped wax, drum machines and laptops while La Mano Fria canvased the area for security reasons. Special thanks to Iris for the photos. ![]() |

| >>> Welcome to Arepaz! ¡Bien Benidos a Arepaz! | ||
This is Arepaz. The Miami-based record label that produces sounds of future latin jazz, folk, breakbeats, instrumental dub and all forms of electronic soul. Unlike many labels and artists out there trying to ride the latin, jazz and soul bandwagon, Arepaz roots and reputation is clear and real. Own and operated by Latin American first generation immigrants, with a roster of artists that mostly come from Latin American, Caribbean and African roots and many sharing the same experience of immigrating. Though our sound is influenced where we're from, it no doubt has influenced by where our artists are at. Miami, Atlanta, New York City all being great sources of classic and contemporary soul music such as hip hop, house, techno, IDM, electro bass and funk just to name a few. This fusion and forward motion in rhythm and sound is Arepaz. Established in 2005, Arepaz also is an official label of Beta Bodega Coalition, the Coalition that started in 1998 and brought forth record labels such as Beta Bodega, Botanica del Jibaro and Rice and Beans (which is now their official clothing brand). The most notable element of all Beta Bodega Coalition labels is the fusion of forward thinking music, design and message. Many messages and themes deal with the struggle and plight of Third World peoples and their migration experience. Arepaz represents the future, music on the move. When people take back their own culture and evolve through music and visuals and transmit it to the rest of the world. Never forgetting where and what we came from. This is the soul source of Arepaz. |
